Settlement

The lawsuit ended in a settlement on Monday.  While the amount that Nate will receive is WAY less than what the lawyers were expecting, we no longer have to worry about paying for his college.  So excited that God provided this money for him.

We're very thankful that it settled instead of going to court.  This was the first case in Florida in which a birthparent died due to a hospital mistake prior to the baby being born when the baby was later adopted.  Needless to say, it's a case that isn't the norm.

We loved our time in Florida.  Within minutes of being back in Jax, we felt like we had never left.  We dreaded leaving, but it feels good to be home.  (I'll share pictures from our trip soon.)

New things are on the horizon for the VBK family.  Going to try to blog about those this week.

It's Finally Time

When I started blogging, my intentions were to keep our family and friends updated with our adoption journey and today, my intentions are the same.  For a long time, I've considered going private, allowing us some privacy and I think it's finally time.

When we entered the adoption world, I wanted nothing more than to have a closed adoption.  After we were matched with Nate, I realized that some contact can be good.  We have what is considered a semi open adoption.  She has my phone number and we text a little.  I have a blog just for her that I update every couple of months with new pictures and facts about our boy.  We send an update in the mail a few times each year so that she can watch him grow.  We have met up with her a handful of times since Nate made it out of the NICU at 6 weeks old.

I have never regretted the contact we've had with her and know that any sacrifice I have to make to continue that contact is something I do out of love for Nate.  That being said, I have gotten to the point that I want to keep some things private.  I want to be able to share some things on the blog and not worry about her finding our family blog.  I want to be able to share the names of the places that we work or go to without worrying about who can see it. I don't fear her coming to find Nate and take him away (which she can't do), but I just want to be able to share details and keep things more private.

As most of you know, Dave, Nate, and I are currently in Florida.  Prior to Nate's birth, his birthfather died of a cardiac arrest and through an investigation, it was found that his death was a wrongful death due to mistakes that were made in the hospital.  Nate's birthmother filed a lawsuit against the hospital because of this and since Nate was a legal heir at the time of the death, we are involved in the lawsuit because the insurance companies are requiring it.  Dave and Nate's birthmother, whose name just happens to be Jennifer, too, are currently sitting in on the mediation and settlement of the case. We have no idea what will come out of this lawsuit and we are okay with it.  If he receives no money, that's perfectly fine with us.  If he does get some money, then we'll have some money to put aside for his future.

Thank you for being a part of our friends and family and for loving our Nate and for wanting to stay connected with what is going on with our family.
